Isn't it the same semantic than <isValid> then? The nature of the
validation is new, but this is a validation by a schema which is opaque
as far as the framework is concerned.

The difficulty (and necessity) of <split> came from an attempt to
separate the definition of the split from the definition of the
validation to perform on aech island. If we remove this constraint, I
think we can just drop <split> and allow to include inline schemas
(whatever their type is) in addition to external schemas.
