I note the point, but would point out that situations exist where you want
to check character sets independently of datatyping (e.g. to ensure that
your output devices can handle the input) and that, therefore, we should
allow this to be a separate process. I would agree, however, that it should
be possible to use both datatypes and character repetoires in similar
situations and see no reason why character repetoire definitions should not
be used as data types within RELAX NG, etc, using existing mechanisms and a
character repetoire resolver. All we need is someone to develop such a
resolver. Alternatively we could add a mechanism to Part 5 to allow a
character repetoire name to be used as a range indicator in a regular
expression.
